XP-61E Day Fighter Conversion Concise Models & Graphics No. 1005 1:48
Designed for the Monogram 1/48 P-61 (not included)
Two P-61Bs were converted to daytime long-range escort fighters for B-29 raids in the Pacific. The crew was reduced to two and sat under a bubble canopy. The turrets were removed, additional fuel tanks replaced the radar operator's cockpit. Four .50 caliber machine guns took place of the radar in the nose and the 20 mm ventral cannon were retained. The aircraft was first flown on November 20, 1944 but was cancelled after the war ended.
This kit contains resin conversion parts and a vac-formed canopy. Not for the faint of heart, but a beautiful bird. One XP-61E was later converted to the first XF-15. Also a perfect "what-if" for escorting B-36s over Tokyo.
